Have you ever heard of Bourbon – wait, no, not that Bourbon, I mean Burbn, the mobile app.\u00a0 If you haven’t, don’t worry, you have plenty of company.<\/p>\n

Most people don’t know that Instagram, who sold to Facebook for a billion dollars in 2012, started its life as an app called Burbn,\u00a0which was basically a knock off of another hugely popular app\u00a0called FourSquare.\u00a0 So how did Instagram go from a fairly anonymous copycat app in 2010, to\u00a0become the\u00a0billion dollar photo sharing\u00a0app we all know and love,\u00a0in\u00a0just two short years?\u00a0 \u00a0Their secret was the Pivot<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Pivoting is the concept of changing direction on your app’s original intention and evolving it rapidly based on what the users want.\u00a0 Not what you think the users want but what they actually use based on real data.\u00a0 The Pivot was one of Instagram’s biggest secrets on the road to their billion dollar success and it is now the mind set and\u00a0approach utilised\u00a0in Silicon Valley by some of world\u2019s most successful apps.<\/p>\n

So how do you Pivot?\u00a0 Let’s see what Burbn\/Instagram did.\u00a0\u00a0Burbn was designed as\u00a0a check-in app\u00a0where users could check into different venues and share pictures of the events –\u00a0but that focus was not\u00a0getting the app\u00a0much traction. The founders used analytics to see what\u00a0was really happening.\u00a0The founders used actual\u00a0usage data to discover\u00a0that the photo sharing feature was\u00a0the most popular feature;\u00a0Burbn users loved\u00a0sharing their photos – but cared far less about any other the other features of the Burbn app.\u00a0\u00a0The founders then\u00a0used this data to make a tough Pivot decision – they decided to cut back all the other features and focus on photo sharing exclusively. They studied all the photosharing apps\u00a0available and made\u00a0the newly rebranded, Instagram,\u00a0the best photo sharing app on the market.<\/p>\n

Another great example of a billion dollar Pivot comes from the popular instant messaging app, Whatsapp.\u00a0 Whatsapp originally was a status update app where users\u00a0would share their status updates with all their contacts. The app didn’t really take off until\u00a0they discovered their Pivot moment. \u00a0You see,\u00a0true ‘app-renuers’ are on a constant look out for their Pivot moment – that moment where they truly understand what their customers need – and for Whatsapp this meant\u00a0looking at the data and how users were using their app. They noticed a trend. The status messages changed from status updates like \u2018I am at the gym\u2019 to messages like \u2018how are you?\u2019. They saw what users really wanted was the ability to send or push messages instantly to their contacts\u00a0so they changed the app to an instant messenger app. We all know about the rapid growth story from there to being sold for $19 billion to Facebook.<\/p>\n

So what is\u00a0the Pivot secret formula?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

There are some pretty simple steps:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Develop Your App Idea: your app must be in use with a user base.\u00a0 No app = no Pivot<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Analytics: you must track what features are getting used most and then go deeper to understand how they are getting used<\/strong><\/p>\n

Search for your Pivot Moment: you need to be vigilant in looking for new trends or shift in usage of your app so you don’t miss your Pivot Moment when it arrives (keep in mind Pivots can reoccur in different forms so don’t think they only come along once in your app journey)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Strong Management: when your Pivot Moment arrives you need to be able to make the call to shift directions and articulate how you will shift directions based on the data you have acquired.<\/strong><\/p>\n
